Shopping in Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a duty-free shopper’s heaven and still continues to offer duty free goods despite changes elsewhere in Europe. Prices at the airport, notably for tobacco and spirits, are among the least expensive in the world.

Shops in Gibraltar tend to follow British rather than Spanish opening hours. The majority of shops open from 9 am to 6 pm, Mondays to Fridays, although some remain open a bit later. On Saturdays, most shops close at 1:30 pm with a few opened till 4 pm. Shops are closed on Sundays unless a cruise ship is in port.

Traditionally, British expatriates living in nearby Spain have flocked to Gibraltar to bank and to shop for those tastes of home such as Cheddar cheese and tea bags. The latter are now freely available in Spain but these expatriates still flock to the Rock for a different shopping experience.

Many of the big British High Street names are here such as Marks & Spencer, Morrison's Superstore, BHS, Mothercare, Evans and Dorothy Perkins, amongst others.

The majority of the shops are on or around Main Street. This has been transformed in recent years into a beautiful pedestrianised shopping area. The newly refurbished Casemates Square at the end of Main Street will soon bustle with shops, restaurants and bars.

Among the famous shopping names, you'll also find many smaller local shops that are worth your time to explore. Be on the lookout and you're going to find linen, designer glasses, cigarette shops and wine and spirits at great prices.

Among those things which you will find at incredible bargain prices are perfumes, leather goods as well as jewellery, electronics, and the always popular luxury glass items. Take home with you a piece of Gibraltar Crystal. You'll find them in Casemates Square. You can see glass being made and visit the display centre. You'll also find a wide display of glass on offer to cater for every taste and pocket.
